It’s All About Relationships

Next Monday, July 6, the Oswego Chamber will launch a legislative committee charged with representing the business community’s interests on local and state issues.  The committee will interact with elected officials, identify issues of importance to business and develop position statements for consideration by the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

To accomplish these tasks, we’ve borrowed a page from our leads group’s playbook whereby we will focus on building trusting relationships.  As the leads groups have masterfully built their success on their relationships with their group members, the Chamber has invited our area elected representatives to be regular participants on the Legislative Committee.  Hopefully this structure will provide the vehicle for ease of information sharing and ultimately the development of relationships which result in an appreciation for varying points of view.

Invited to participate with the committee are representatives of our Illinois House and Senate Districts, Kendall County, Oswego Township and the communities of Oswego, Yorkville and Montgomery.

Members wishing to have a voice in the legislative process are encouraged to serve on the committee.  Meetings will be held monthly on the first Monday at 3:00 pm in the Oswego Economic Development Corporation conference room, 26 W. Van Buren Street.  Please call the Chamber office (630) 554-3505 to express your willingness to serve and plan to attend next Monday’s initial meeting.

Business Tips

Michael Cassa, Executive Director, OEDC:

Maintaining Your Position Even in a Down Economy

OEDC Executive Director Michael Cassa offers the following advice for keeping your business on a progressive course despite the economic slowdown:

  • Be proactive in finding out if your good customers, clients, patients or tenants are truly happy with your product or service and its value. Do what it takes to keep them satisfied; otherwise, they might become someone else’s “new” customer.
  • Don’t cut marketing budgets so much that you can no longer attract new customers.
  • Investigate how your competitors are presenting themselves. Study their websites, and pay attention to where they advertise. Adjust your brand position accordingly.
  • Ensure that you and your employees are equally committed to growing the business through increased productivity. Take honest inventory of who is really on board.
  • Attend events hosted by the Oswego Chamber of Commerce and the Oswego Economic Development Corporation, as well as Rotary and Optimist Club meetings. It’s a great way to meet new customers while supporting your community.
